Fairytale Drabbles; 050. Mistaken Identity.

Her name is not Zoe. Of course it’s not. Zoe is far too posh a name, far too elegant and interesting for a girl from a nasty section of Yorkshire, barely living off the streets. She’d picked it, from a tv ad for an evening drama that she watched from the window of an electronics shop. The tv Zoe was beautiful and fascinating and not the least bit ragged, after all.

She didn’t use that name for some years, not until she was in her early to mid-teens - she’d lost count, honestly, somewhere along the line - and she was picked up by a lady who thought she had potential. And when she’d had paperwork to fill out, dotted lines to sign on, she signed the name Zoe Kattalakis. And that’s what’s she’s been ever since. She never heard the old name again.

Not for years, at least, not until a broad-accented voice shouting Melissa makes her blood run cold and her spine stiffen into iron. But she doesn’t turn around. Of course she doesn’t.

She keeps going.
